The best Xero alternative for UK freelancers
Xero is a full accounting platform built for teams, accountants, and growing businesses. If you’re a UK freelancer or sole trader who needs to invoice clients and get paid — not run a full set of books — Invoa is purpose-built for that workflow, simpler, and takes minutes to set up.

The core difference
Xero is built for accountants and growing businesses. It offers double-entry bookkeeping, payroll, expense management, projects, and a vast accountant ecosystem — features that are genuinely valuable for a small business with employees and complex finances. If you’re a freelancer who needs to send invoices, track payments, and stay HMRC-compliant, Invoa does that at a fraction of the cost, without the overhead of navigating a full accounting dashboard.

Frequently asked questions
Is Xero worth it for freelancers?
Xero is excellent software, but it is built for small businesses and growing companies that need a full accounting suite — double-entry bookkeeping, payroll, expense management, bank reconciliation, and financial reporting. For a sole trader who primarily needs to invoice clients and get paid, most of Xero's feature set goes unused. Xero's Ignite plan at £16/mo is also capped at 20 invoices per month, which is a significant limitation for busier freelancers — unlimited invoicing requires the Grow plan at £37/mo. If you file your own VAT returns and want to submit them directly to HMRC, or if your accountant is on the Xero platform and will use the data directly, Xero can be worth the higher price. For invoicing-first freelancers, Invoa Pro at £7.99/mo with unlimited invoices and Open Banking sync is a more focused and cost-effective choice.
Does Xero have a free plan?
Xero does not offer a free plan. New customers get a 30-day free trial, after which pricing starts at £16/mo for the Ignite plan. The Ignite plan is materially limited: it caps you at 20 invoices and 10 bills per month — not suitable for freelancers who invoice frequently. Unlimited invoicing on Xero requires the Grow plan at £37/mo. By comparison, Invoa has a free Starter plan with no time limit — you can send three invoices per month indefinitely at no cost, with no credit card required. Invoa Pro at £7.99/mo gives you unlimited invoices.
Can Invoa replace Xero?
For invoicing, yes — Invoa covers everything Xero does in the invoicing workflow: HMRC-compliant VAT invoices, automatic payment reminders, PDF generation, client management, and UK Open Banking sync to automatically match bank payments against open invoices. Where Invoa cannot replace Xero is in full accounting: if you need double-entry bookkeeping, a chart of accounts, expense tracking, payroll, or direct MTD VAT return filing to HMRC, Xero has capabilities that Invoa does not. The practical question is whether you actually use those features. Most freelancers who switch from Xero to Invoa were paying for a full accounting suite and only using the invoicing part.
Does Invoa support Making Tax Digital?
Invoa keeps MTD-compatible VAT records — all invoices are stored with the required VAT breakdowns that HMRC requires under Making Tax Digital for VAT. However, Invoa does not currently submit VAT returns directly to HMRC's MTD API; you would use bridging software or your accountant's software to file your VAT returns. Xero includes full MTD for VAT submission built in and is an HMRC-approved MTD service provider, which is a genuine advantage if you file your own VAT returns without an accountant. If direct MTD VAT submission from your invoicing tool is a priority, Xero has the edge.
